We are very glad to announce that Ramadan 2018 / 1439 will start on Wednesday, 16th May in North, Central and South America, as well as in a few countries of Africa and in French Polynesia. All the other parts of the world, mainly the majority of the countries in Africa and Oceania, all of Europe and Asia will start Ramadan on the next day, 17th May 2018, Insha Allah! Kindly see below the list of countries arranged as per the start date of Ramadan to get a better idea.
Please check the new moon visibility prediction for Ramadan 2018. The astronomical New Moon is born on Tuesday, May 15 at 11:47 UT. As is evident from the curve, except for French Polynesia and part of the Western Pacific, direct visibility of the new moon is not possible in most parts of the world. However, the direct visibility in Polynesia can be extended to the North, Central and South America as well as to some countries of Africa. Hence, based on the concept of the extension of the zone of the visibility, these countries can start Ramadan on Wednesday, 16th May 2018. Those who would like to get a better understanding about the concept of the extension of the zone of the visibility, are requested to read our Introduction to the Islamic calendar.
We now invite you to review the visibility curve for the next day, 16th May 2018. Most of the world is either in a green zone or a blue zone. This means, that all the remaining countries, comprising the majority of Africa and Oceania, all of Europe and Asia can start the Ramadan 2018 fasting on 17th May 2018, Insha Allah!
Those who would like to get more details about why Ramadan 2018 can start on 16th May in some countries and on 17th in other countries, are requested to read our introduction to the Islamic Calendar. They can also find answers concerning the questions about the concept of the extension of the zone of the visibility by reading the introduction.
On 15th May 2018, Tuesday and on 16th May, Wednesday, we will publish Ramadan 1439 live moon sighting reports along with photographs on this page of our website. Those reports will be sourced from moonsighting.com, icop.org and also from our astronomer friends around the globe. Thus, we invite you to visit our site towards the beginning of Ramadan in order to get updates about crescent sighting. We will also publish live crescent sighting reports on our Facebook and Twitter accounts, so please follow / like us on our social media account as well.
On the very auspicious day of Eid al-Fitr 2018, we will release country specific Islamic calendars for Hijri year 1440 and also for the Gregorian year 2019. So please keep visiting our site during the whole Ramadan month.

We would like to wish all our visitors Ramadan Mubarak in Advance!
A dozen countries have started the Ramadan fasting already on 16th May 2018. These are, to be precise: Angola, Bosnia Herzegovina, Croatia, Germany, Ireland, Kosovo, Luxemburg, Macedonia, Montenegro, Niger, Serbia, Slovenia and Turkey.
In Istanbul, in Turkey, for example, the faithful have prayed Subh the morning of 16th May at 04:04 h in local time. It so happens that one of the earliest possibilities of seeing the new moon is at Papeete, in French Polynesia, on 15th May at 17:51 h, still in local time. Now, when it is 15th May 17:51 h in Papeete, it is already 16th May 06:51 h in Istanbul. Which means close to three hours after the time for praying Subh!
Amiably, we draw the attention of Muslims to the fact that such practice is forbidden in Islam. As proof, we cite the two following Hadiths and a verse from the Koran. 1st Hadith reported by Attarmidi: “Ibn Yasser has said: “Whosoever fasts on the day of doubt has disobeyed Abu El Kassim – that is to say the Prophet – on him salvation and benediction”. 2nd Hadith, reported by El Boukhari: “The Prophet – PBUH – has said, according to Abu Hurayra: “Do not precipitate Ramadan by fasting during the day, or the two days, that precede it.” Thirdly – the verse from the Koran – Surah 5, Verse 92: “Obey God! Obey the Messenger! Take heed!”
Such is the Religious Truth! Such is scientific Truth!
There are very good chances of crescent visibility in most part of the world today, 16th May 2018. We will publish sighting reports as soon as we get them. Kindly see our Ramadan announcement for more details.
