Explanation of Above dates

We invite our visitors to observe the visibility curves of 15th and 16th October 2012 by clicking here.

The new moon of October 2012 is born on 15th October at 12:02, universal time (UTC). The visibility curve for the evening of this day shows that the new crescent cannot be sighted anywhere in the world. Thus Dhul-Hijjah 2012 cannot start on 16th October 2012 in any country in the world. 16th October 2012 will be the last day of Dhul-Qi’dah 2012.

Next day, 16th October 2012, the visibility map shows that an extensive zone of visibility (green and blue zones) covers almost the entire earth, including Saudi Arabia, in general and the holy city of Makkah, in particular. All countries covered by the visibility zones – Makkah and Saudi Arabia, of course – will be able to start Dhul-Hijjah 2012 on 17th October 2012.

For countries not directly covered by a visibility zone – the north-eastern parts of Europe, for example – the concept of extended visibility holds : if there is visibility to the west of the location, until fajr in the location, then the month starts in the place considered.

A look at the visibility map of 16th October 2012 shows that countries not directly in a visibility zone will have an indirect visibility zone towards the west before fajr. For such a clear situation, we refrain from publishing any detailed analysis as we have done for the beginning of Ramadan and for Eid al Fitr.

For all countries in the world, Dhul-Hijjah 2012 (1433) will start on 17th October 2012. This specially holds for Makkah and for Saudi Arabia. Since the 1st of Dhul-Hijjah 1433 is on 17th October 2012, Wuquf-Arafat / Hajj 2012 will be celebrated on 25th October 2012.

Similarly, Eid al-Adha 2012 / Aid El-Adha 2012 / Aid El-Kebir 2012 will be on Friday, 26th October 2012. A detailed list of countries where Dhul-Hijjah 2012 starts on 17th October 2012 and where Eid al Adha 2012 / Aid El Adha 2012 / Aid El Kebir 2012 should be celebrated on 26th October 2012 is available below.
